1. How to convert your prints to digital files?
Over the years your photos have gathered dust, dirt , grease or other foreign material such as hair or lint, depending on the condition of the photograph you can remove these particles with a soft brush, we recommend using gloves to prevent leaving fingerprints on the surface. Try to do this on a clean environment and do not attempt to remove photos that are stuck to glass or other photos.
If the photo is torn apart, try to arrange the pieces close to each other but avoid their contact.
2. Photographing images is an alternative to scanning.
We can transform printed images into digital file with a digital camera and it works just fine.
DSLR Cameras and even our smartphones can capture and reproduce accurately most older photographs, event when printed or when found in a digital form
Your phone camera or digital camera are quite capable to generate a decent input to be brought into Photoshop, however depending on the purpose of the photo, your knowledge about technology it is always better to consider professional scanning services or devices as the preferred choice.
A photo of a photo is particularly convenient when trying to digitalise a large sized photography.
Today we can be visiting a family member and take copy of a printed or framed photo just by following some general rules of thumb when using the camera of our phone.
This is particularly helpful next time you are visiting your grandma and she won’t let go of the family album.
Even though the fidelity won’t be the the best, using your phone camera will give you an opportunity to get a snapshot and a duplicate of a precious photo
1. Turn on the Grid
Having the photo closer to the aspect of the photo is what you want to square up the corners and edges, this way you will avoid undesirable perspectives, although this can be easiliy fixed in photoshop with a perspetive cropping tool, it is best practice to line up your phone as flat as possible above the photo.
2. Avoid shadows and reflections
Ligth bulbs or direct sunlight won’t make the capture look even, and these castings are really difficult to edit from a photo, make sure you avoid this at any cost, glossy papers are particulary your worst enemy in this situation, but a good advice is to try to take the photo in the shade outside, cloudy days are the best, just try to avoid your own shadow or your phone shadow when capturing the image.
Indirect light or a softbox are of good assistance too, there are excellent and cheap options in the market to do this.
3. DSLR’s are great to capture a photo of a photo
A good quality camera, especially full-frame cameras are a great way to capture the information of an old photo, specially when you want the original to remain untouched. Just make sure you use a tripod and a good aperture setting and focus properly and within the focal range of your lenses.
On the other hand shooting in RAW is vital, as you want to get the most information out of the original photo, RAW files will provide with a extense dynamic range and will provide you more data and hence higher resolution file.
4. Wide angle lenses are not that great.
When capturing a photo of a phot o you want to avoid lens distortion, as it will generation undesirable deformation due to the sense curvature, instead try using a macro lens and try to keep the frame straight.
