Capturing important moments with a camera is like investing in family heirlooms. For example, wedding photographs grow in value as the years go by.
Most older photographs are one of a kind. So they are more than precious objects: they are a legacy for future generations and a great tool for tracing our ancestors.
A damaged image can be heartbreaking. The bad news is that every photo degrades over time through the environment, handling, damp, water, dust and, ironically, the very thing that created it: light!

Scanning is a practical, traditional way to digitise your photos and bring them into editing software such as Adobe Photoshop.
Compared with other ways of digitising, scanning has a big advantage: it gives you a controlled environment. As a result, you get consistent results, and the scanner glass even flattens unwanted curling in your originals.

Your images have accumulated dust, grime, oil, or other foreign material such as hair or lint over the years, particles that will remain there and become more evident if photo enlarging;
Depending on the quality of the photograph, you may remove these particles using a soft brush; however, we suggest wearing gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints on the surface. Try to accomplish this in a sterile setting and avoid removing images that have been stuck to glass or other photos, any damage now will complicate the photo restoration process.
If the picture has been broken into parts, you should attempt to arrange them such that they are near to one another on the scanner’s glass, but not overlapping and do not use glue or sticky tape.
DSLR cameras and smartphones can capture and copy most older photos.
Your phone or digital camera can produce an acceptable starting point for Photoshop. However, depending on the photo’s purpose and your skill with the software, professional scanning or dedicated equipment is often better.
A photo of a photo is especially handy for very large prints.
For example, you can snap a copy of a printed or framed picture with your phone while visiting a relative. This is great when Granny won’t let go of the family album, and it is sometimes enough for us to restore a photo.
Even if the quality won’t be outstanding, you may acquire a derivative of a beloved picture using your phone and we can use this photo as a baseline to restore the photo further
You can fix this in Photoshop with the perspective crop tool. Even so, it’s best to hold your phone as flat as possible over the picture, so the corners and edges are square. Your camera grid is an excellent guide, so make sure you use it.
Try to take the photo outdoors in the shade. Cloudy days are best. Also, avoid your own shadow and your phone’s shadow when you capture the image.
There are also affordable tools on the market, such as softboxes, that give you soft, indirect light.
A high-quality camera, especially a full-frame model, is ideal for reproducing the detail of an old photograph without handling it much. Just focus carefully, use a tripod and choose a suitable aperture.
Above all, shoot in RAW to capture as much information as possible from the original. RAW files have a wider dynamic range and far more tonal information than JPEGs.
Use a macro lens if you can, and keep the frame straight when you photograph a picture. Otherwise, lens distortion can bend straight lines and warp the image.
