1. Damage
Assessment

We write a big part of our history in photos and most of us want to keep these precious memories alive and passed down to the next generations, at the end of the day, we want to preserve our legacy in a pristine condition. Please refer to the State Library of Western Australia for photo preservation tips as well as the National Archives of Australia photographs preservation guide

The first logical step to correctly price a restoration is to assess the extent of the damage and to get an insight of what caused the deterioration, based on this we can get an estimate on how difficult it is to recover the photo.

At Yesterdays photo we have set some price ranges and categorise different types of photo restoration

2. Input and
Output size

Depending on the purpose of your restoration the level of detail required and amount work usually vary, There are considerable differences between a photo needed for web and a photo that will be re-printed.

Added to this, the desired size of the photo is a contributing factor, larger photos or headshots require much more attention to detail than a small photography.

There are different grades that range from basic family photo edits to high-end  or museum-grade digital photo restoration, logically this determines the level and amount of work required and staff involved in the process.

3. Production
requirements

Some edits and restoration might require substantial on-site or historical research, to obtain results closer to the original conditions, including exposure settings the time period when the shot was taken.

This type of research activity has a direct effect of the final price of the restoration, and it is considered predominantly when the photos have missing pieces or when colourisation of photography is required.

Furthermore, if you have problems scanning a photo or a negative we can assist you during this process or guide you by using our recommended scanning approach.

Last but not least prints and framing are another contributing factor to the photo restoration pricing

Important:

Please note: the prices and inclusions above are a guide. The final scope of work may vary depending on our damage assessment, your specific requirements, and the condition and quality of the originals you supply. We will always confirm the scope and cost with you before any work begins, there are no surprises.

All prices include GST and are current as of July 2026. Pricing is reviewed annually

Restoration starts at $289 inc GST for a two-hour session, which handles most standard damage — dust, scratches, fading and minor tears. Severely damaged photographs needing four hours cost $489 inc GST. Damage assessment is free, so you know the price before committing.

Digitising means scanning your photograph at high resolution (3200 dpi) and optimising the scan for colour, levels and sharpness. It does not repair damage. Restoration is hands-on repair work — rebuilding torn areas, removing stains, correcting colour shift. Many customers digitise a whole collection, then choose a handful of images to restore.

Digitising 500 photos costs $1,879 inc GST. That is the $289 collection management base plus $3.18 per image at the 500–999 rate. Larger collections attract a lower per-image rate: 1,000 images works out at $3,269 inc GST.

Every project involves at least two hours of work before any images are touched, assessing the collection, setting up and colour-profiling the scanner, quality-checking output and safely handling and returning your originals. The $289 covers that. For restoration, it covers a two-hour working session on your photograph.

In most cases, yes, including tears, missing corners, water staining, mould marks and severe fading. The honest answer depends on what survives in the original. Send it through for a free damage assessment and we will tell you what is realistically recoverable before you spend anything.

Yes for digitising and optimisation the per-image rate falls as the collection grows: $3.80 per image up to 99 images, $3.25 from 100, $3.18 from 500, and $2.98 for collections of 1,000 or more. The $289 base applies to every project regardless of size.

They are a guide. The final scope may vary depending on our damage assessment, your specific requirements, and the condition of the originals you supply a photograph with severe mould damage takes longer than one that has simply faded, or a collection that has physical damage,  require special treament, or digitising specifics, We confirm the scope and the cost with you before starting work, so you always know what you are paying before you commit.
